Description: The Digital Learning Strategy is intended to enhance how digital technology is used in post-secondary education in British Columbia, including digital components of in-person, hybrid, multi-access, and other flexible programs. Technology-integrated learning is not intended to replace in-person learning models, rather it is a complement to it that has the potential to increase access to post-secondary education across B.C. The goal of the strategy is to support outcomes that are relevant and responsive to all members of post-secondary communities and other Indigenous institutes.
Participants in this session will gain insights into some of the challenges associated with strategic initiatives at the provincial system-level scale and how this process has been successful in navigating those to date. In this session, we will share the process we used in the B.C. Digital Learning Advisory Committee, review the strategy that was developed, and welcome input from participants.

Speakers
Valerie Irvine is a professor and area advisor of educational technology and co-director of the Technology Integration and Evaluation (TIE) Research Lab in the Faculty of Education at the University of Victoria. She has taught in face-to-face, blended, online, and multi-access formats, so has a deep understanding of modality. She started teaching both online and open since 1998. She developed both the multi-access framework and also coined the term cyberproxy, both of which seek to merge face-to-face and online modalities. She is also president of the Open/Technology in Education, Society, and Scholarship Association (OTESSA).
Ben Ferrel is a graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Master of Educational Technology program, and is the Executive Director responsible for Post-Secondary Digital Policy and Programs within the B.C. Ministry of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
Afsaneh Sharif is a Faculty Liaison/Senior Project Manager with over 20 years Instructional Design experience at the University of British Columbia. She is interested in implementing research findings into practice and works closely with faculty members to ensure that course and program design and development are accessible and inclusive.

About the Presentation: The pandemic accelerated all aspects of the work and learning life cycle from recruitment through skill development on and off the job, to offboarding. These changes are fueled by technology innovations and changing expectations of employees, employers, and education providers. Evidence of these changes can be found the new applications and in the changing role of learning professionals. Today’s experience platforms bridge the learner life cycle, leverage artificial Intelligence for skills inference, course recommendations, and content curation; and integrate with other internal and external systems.
Speaker: Margaret Driscoll is a program manager in IBM’s Talent & Transformation organization. She leads a global team of software developers and learning specialists delivering applications that fuse work and learning. She has implemented learning solutions for employees and customers of Fortune 1000 clients. Working with HR leaders, line of business owners and non-profits she has helped organization, upskill workers, engage students, and close the skills gap for organization facing digital transformation. Margaret has an M.Ed in Instructional Technology from Boston College; MBA from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, and an Ed.D. from Columbia University in Adult Educations. She is co-author with Saul Carliner of An Overview of Training and Development: Why Training Matters (2019). She is also a co-author with Yvonne Thayer and Saul Carliner of Career Anxiety: Guidance Through Tough Times (2021).

Get inspired by perspectives on the fringes and see the value of troublemakers and philosophers in the design of educational experiences.
What can we learn from disruptive students to enhance our design and the educational experiences of all of our students? Let’s bring Søren Kierkegaard, philosopher and grandfather of existentialism, into our instructional design team to discover together a perspective change that leads to different design ideas for inclusive educational experiences. In this talk, we explore what the literature tells us about the value of disruptive students and the contributions from philosophy to gain new insight.
Presenter: Johannes Strobel is Director, STEM&CS Education at SRI International, a non-for-profit research institute, which he joined after 20 years in academia at both Canadian and US institutions. After studies in philosophy and learning technologies, he is a learning engineer focusing on solutions in STEM education; defiance, empathy and care and how to overcome the gender and ethnic/racial inequality in STEM education. Strobel has been PI/Co-PI of grants totaling over $36MM publishing 160 papers in journals/proceedings and is an award-winning designer of learning modules.

In this showcase session, learn about an award-winning educational program (an example of practice) and award-winning research on teaching-related issues.
Showcase 1: Problem-Based, Multimedia Case Study for Learning about Forest Soils in South Africa
The incorporation of multimedia material in the problem based learning (PBL) case study, focused on soils in subtropical forests of South Africa (https://pinusradiata.soilweb.ca/), offers students a virtual international learning opportunity to gain a global perspective of forest management while comparing them to forestry practices in British Columbia. The project team included academics, multimedia producers, and learning designers from The University of British Columbia and Stellenbosch University.
Presenter: Maja Krzic is an Associate Professor in the Faculties of Land and Food Systems and Forestry at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and a 3M Teaching Fellow.
Showcase 2: Institutional Perspectives on Faculty Development for Digital Education in Canada
As digital education at the post-secondary level grows, professional development that prepares faculty to teach in online and blended settings is necessary. In this study, we analyzed open-ended comments from the Canadian Digital Learning Research Association’s annual survey of Canadian post-secondary institutions (2017-2019) to deepen our understanding of faculty training and support for digital education as articulated by higher education institutions. Our findings have implications for research and professional development practices.

• Charlene A. VanLeeuwen is Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Centre at the University of Prince Edward Island.
• Nicole Johnson is the Research Director of the Canadian Digital Learning Research Association and has been involved in the field of educational technology for over a decade.
• Olga Belikov works in the Centre for Educational Excellence at Simon Fraser University providing leadership and support to online and blended course initiatives.

And as the pandemic wanes (we hope), experts expect automation and artificial intelligence to disrupt work, the economy, and education over the next decade. That means educational technology seems poised to continuing playing a central spot in education.

Join CNIE for Our Next Virtual Showcase, October 19
What? Join CNIE for its first Virtual Showcase event. This two-part event features two parts, each exploring open-ness:
- Open Networking: An opportunity to meet other members of the field through a brief and informal discussion of a topic of mutual interest.
- Awards Showcase, which provides designers’ perspectives about their award-winning work (recognized in the most recent CNIE awards program). This month:
A Path to Open Pedagogy through Open Educational Resources: Educator created Open Education Resources (OER) are finally starting to get the attention they deserve as textbook alternatives. While there is a focus on the cost saving and access implications of OER, few are exploring the pedagogical possibilities offered by these tools in the classroom. Over the last few years, my students and I created, published, and then polished a Spanish OER textbook that allows students to control their learning path as they develop open content within an open learning framework. This presentation will talk about the process, the product, and the pedagogical outcomes of student created OER.
